Poland was by far the better team in the first half. They looked far more comfortable on the ball. They stuffed every U.S. attack, whether down the middle or on the sides. The U.S. defense looked unsteady, and there were too many "boot the ball clear of danger" moments.
But they seemed to catch some confidence in the second half and played a much more flowing style of soccer. Poland sat Dudek on the bench, and the results was a lousy clearance that allowed the U.S. to score. Probably wouldn't have happened if Dudek had been back there.
Poland is a big, strong side that plays very well in the midfield. So all in all, it was good practice for the U.S. for this summer's tournament. If the U.S. defenders have a chance to play together, they'll get better. As it was, last night's starting back four came from Leeds United, Energie Cottbus, Standard de Liege and Hannover 96. The one sub, Bocanegra, starts for Fulham.
Keller- outstanding. Jumped out on a few saves, kept most threats away. Obviosuly #1 choice.
Howard- solid presence in goal
Donovan-excellent. Clearly the best prepared player, growing into the role as on-field play maker
Berhalter- good
Bocanegra-a little unsure in some areas, but he’s got lots of experience
Zavagnin- OK
Mastroeni- rusty; midfield spot not guaranteed
Johnson- no real footing in the first half, played with more confidence in the second half
Lewis and Cherundolo- good all-around games.
Beasley-better second half than the first
Convey- excellent; fast and a constant worry to
Wolff- not enough touches to say
Twellman-early on was lost in the forest of red-shirted defenders; best playing when he breaks free or gets good crosses (see goal replay); could be a non-presence against the German defenders
Dempsey- nice goal, tough first half, but Bruce will pick him for the WC squad.
Onyewu- great game, despite nervous play and lots of shirt-grabbing in his own penalty area
