Arena leans toward Convey

Bruce Arena thinks Bobby Convey is ready to play in Germany. He's making this (selection) too easy, but these kind of comments make you wonder what those habits are/were ...

He had had a long conversation with Arena last summer after a World Cup-qualifying game against Costa Rica, and Arena encouraged him to return to England for preseason training instead of playing in the Gold Cup in July for the USA.

"I told him, 'You just have to dig in and deal with that environment and get in the preseason and earn a position.' That's the reason why he played (this year). He was in preseason, and he earned it. That's the first time in Bobby's career he was really held accountable for his performance and his habits."

Well, I mean, Convey always had a rap while he was in DC. Sometimes deservedly, and sometimed because United fans are worse than Yankees fans at times. But Convey has even admitted he didn't really put forward a good attitude here. I think there's an interview at Yanks Abroad where Convey admits he didn't realize how his attitude at DC might have been poor until he sat a season at Reading.

I think the time at Reading was good for Bobby. It'll be interesting to see what happens now that they've been promoted.

Having watched Convey at both teams, he has moved from a sometimes-tentative dribbler to a serious attacking menace. He seems to have become that classic English top flight midfielder. I hope he starts in Germany, if Bruce can find a place on the field for both Convey and Beasley.
